For almost seven years, Stephen Payne has tried to make a go of it in Champaign-Urbana. The single dad has three kids aged 13 to 19, currently staying with their mother in Sacramento, California.
Life hasn’t been easy for him. The food assistance program at Restoration Urban Ministries has been a Godsend, helping to stabilize his life.
“As soon as I get back on my feet, I want to give back to others – to inspire them,” says the smiling 47-year-old. “I want to come back to Restoration someday soon and volunteer to hand out food rather than being in line to receive food. Helping others makes me feel better.”
